“Yesterday’s just a memory, tomorrow is never what it’s supposed to be”Bob Dylan

“Life lived for tomorrow will always be just a day away from being realized” - Leo Buscaglia

“Never leave that till tomorrow which you can do today” - Benjamin Franklin

I could go on, but in fairness, any one of a thousand famous quotes about the futility of delaying grand plans would be appropriate to start off this latest frustrating development in the smartbook sector…

Laptop Magazine reports Lenovo is going to delay the launch of the Skylight, having spoken to ’sources’ within the company. “With any new product that we introduce, we owe it to our customers to get it right and we would rather take the little extra time that sometimes takes to finalize a product,” explained the mole.

A “little extra time” sure, but this latest holdup means six months will have passed since the Skylight was first unveiled at CES in January. Given the Skylight’s role as the undoubted flagship of the smartbook sector, this is not good news at all. It also comes on the back of yet more ‘tweaks’ to fellow high profile smartbook the Mobinnova Beam, which had been expected in early 2010, but as yet still doesn’t have a release date. Mobinnova’s latest move was to replace the Beam’s Windows CE operating system with Android , though such moves increasingly feel like procrastination.

Do telecoms partners have cold feet? Is the public now interested in tablets? Is a smartbook still a smartbook if it follows the crowd and removes the keyboard? Will consumers buy first-generation smartbooks if they aren’t significantly cheaper than netbooks?

We’d love to be able to give you answers to these questions, but while manufacturers keep stalling their plans,  the debate surrounding the viability of smartbooks will remain theoretical, not substantial, and we’re getting sick and tired of theory.
